Samim Sultani
RMIT University
Samim was born and raised in Afghanistan before arriving in Australia in 2021. He had dreamed of studying at an Australian university because of Australia’s reputation for a quality education system. “RMIT provided me with the opportunity to follow my goals in the field of education. Here I found my way. I chose to study education and become a teacher one day.”
He remembers reading about Australia while in Afghanistan and noting the many study opportunities available, such as apprenticeships, work placements, internships and being able to work alongside study. “With these advantages, Australia was a dream country for continuing my studies”, he said.
Samim says he was even more impressed when he started at RMIT. “The education system, teachers and students’ relationship, valuing students’ needs, tailoring lessons for individual students, and mental and emotional health support are only a few advantages that Australia provides.” He also appreciates the freedom of speech, belief, religion, and multiculturalism in Australia.
After completing his Diploma of Teacher Preparation, Samim is taking a gap year to work at a transport company. “I’ve just started my journey in Australia, and there is a long way to go. Studying at an Australian university has helped me get closer to my goals and find great friends and instructors who have supported me through my studies. I am eager to start university next year.”
He advises others who are curious to give the education sector a try. He notes that being able to practice his knowledge through a work place helped him to understand the importance of teaching, and how it can be exciting to work with young minds. “It is not easy but it is rewarding as you see students’ progress throughout the time.”
In future, Samim would like to support other students, especially girls and street worker children in Afghanistan, to study abroad by helping them to find institutions and scholarships.
His advice for others just starting out on their university careers: “If I could go back, I would tell myself to study harder. Read one more journal for my assessments. Besides, I would spend more time on my relationship with teachers and students. They are the greatest support an international student can have. Be respectful towards them and try to learn as much as possible.”
