The Australian Technology Network of Universities, Australia’s leading industry-engaged university grouping, is pleased to announce The University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO as the new Chair of the ATN. Professor Zelinsky will take the reins from Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne, who has been Chair since 2023.
Since becoming a full member of the ATN in 2023, The University of Newcastle has made an enormous contribution to the ATN network. The ATN is pleased to have Professor Zelinsky move into a leadership role, particularly in the weeks leading up to the Australian Federal Election.
Professor Zelinsky praised the dedicated work of outgoing Chair Professor Harlene Hayne CNZM.
“On behalf of all of ATN, I sincerely thank Harlene for her guidance and leadership over the past two years. Professor Hayne has guided the ATN with a steady hand through the Universities Accord process, as well as ATN’s 25th anniversary and other important achievements,” he said.
Professor Harlene Hayne CNZM reflected on her time as Chair and looks towards the future for ATN.
“We are fortunate to have an extraordinary group of Vice-Chancellors leading both the sector and ATN, and I am delighted to know that the ATN will continue to make a difference with Professor Alex Zelinsky AO as our Chair. I look forward to working closely with Alex in the next phase of ATN.”
In addition to the transition of the ATN Chair role, we are also pleased to announce that Emeritus Professor Kent Anderson has also stepped into a leadership role within the ATN as Interim Executive Director. Kent has an extensive and impressive history across the Australian higher education sector, having held senior executive roles at four Australian universities, most recently as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at The University of Newcastle. Importantly he has also served as Senior Advisor for higher education to two Commonwealth Ministers for Education and he has real world experience as an airline executive and commercial lawyer.
