Digital Futures – Data Analytics: Advance and Applied
Embark on an exhilarating learning journey to advance your data analytics skills. Delve into SQL, REGEX, and data visualisation, equipping yourself with the skills to craft captivating narratives from raw data using cloud tools. Unlock the power to inspire change and make informed decisions through compelling data storytelling.
We live in a data-driven world. The expectation is to be able to search through data, find insights, and tell a meaningfully story that informs. This applies to STEM research, government policy, retail firms, universities, sporting clubs – they’re all using data to make better decisions.
While there are many tools available at different stages of the data value chain, the availability of the many options is also a cause of confusion. Building from the foundation laid by the Level 1, this module focusses on approaches that are essential for wrangling and analysing numeric and textual data contained in databases, as well as concepts and techniques for visualizing and communicating data.
You will learn through a dynamic blend of engaging webinars, self-study materials, practice tasks, and collaborative teamwork.
Module Themes:
Learn to use Structural Query Language (SQL) to extract, organise and summarise data. Also learn the basics of regular expression (regex) to extract and filter relevant textual data.
Experiment with the role of artificial intelligence in assisting you, also understand the promises and perils of the current state of this evolution.
Combine these individually powerful tools with principles of data visualisation and storytelling to transform information into inspiration
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing this module, students should be able to:
- Extract information from text such as spreadsheets, documents, web pages or log files (Regex);
- Query information from relational databases to find, link, filter, and sort data (SQL);
- Visualise information into a meaningful summary and story that is fit for purpose; and
- Tell a story that is purposeful using all the above.
Who Should Enrol?
This module is suitable for all Higher Degree by Research students of all disciplines. Whilst all students are able to apply, priority enrolment will be given to students who have completed 3 or more Level 1 Frontiers modules. Students are encouraged to have completed the Level 1 module Future of Data.
Please note: Places are limited so we recommend registering interest as soon as possible.
