The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) welcomes the release of the Sheil Review Report into the Australian Research Council (ARC) because it is crucial that the ARC can do its job with confidence and with the backing of the Higher Education sector.
ATN Executive Director, Luke Sheehy, said ATN looked forward to working with the Government, ARC and Universities Accord review panel to improve the research and innovation system and deliver on local, national and global priorities.
“ATN believes that it is important that ARC provides a trusted and stable cornerstone for Australia’s research system so our universities can deliver what Australia needs in terms of research and innovation,” Mr Sheehy said.
“To achieve this, we must enable ARC to act with the confidence and support of the sector – if adopted, the recommendations of the Sheil Review will go a long way to achieving this.”
In its submission, ATN recommended that the Government, through ARC, identifies and supports research innovation and excellence wherever it occurs, outlines the strategic outcomes sought for ARC research funding, and assesses progress towards agreed research priorities.
“The recommendations help deliver these outcomes, especially the calls for enhanced support for First Nations academics and research and further support for academic careers,” Mr Sheehy added.
“ATN wants to help shape and modernise ARC’s research and innovation evaluations to better reflect Australia’s and the sector’s current and future priorities. The redeployment of the expertise built up through previous assessment programs to guide the design of the grants program and the identification of future research priorities is very welcome.”
