The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) has welcomed the release of the Strategic Examination of R&D Discussion Paper, recognising it as a vital opportunity to address Australia’s research translation gap, industry collaboration, and the future of research funding.
ATN Executive Director, Dr Ant Bagshaw, said the discussion paper shines a light on many of the critical challenges facing Australia’s R&D system, including declining business investment, the need for stronger industry-university collaboration, and better career pathways for researchers.
“Australia has brilliant world-class research, but we need to do more to translate that research into real-world impact. This discussion paper provides a much-needed platform to explore how we can better support applied research, strengthen partnerships with industry, and ensure our R&D system is driving innovation and economic growth,” Dr Bagshaw said.
“ATN universities are at the forefront of industry-engaged research, and we see this as a critical opportunity to push for reforms that will boost research commercialisation, secure sustainable funding for universities, and improve career pathways for researchers.”
Dr Bagshaw emphasised the importance of increasing Australia’s R&D investment and ensuring the next wave of innovation is driven by homegrown talent and technology.
“If we want to remain globally competitive, we must be both technology adopters and technology creators. That means targeted investment in research translation, better incentives for industry to partner with universities, and a renewed focus on applied and experimental development,” he added.
ATN looks forward to engaging with the expert panel and contributing to the consultation process to ensure that Australia’s R&D system is future-ready and maximises its potential for economic and societal benefit.
