Deakin University has announced it has joined the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN), Australia’s most innovative and enterprising university grouping. Deakin becomes the fifth ATN member university, joining Curtin University, RMIT University, University of South Australia, and University of Technology Sydney.
ATN is Australia’s second-largest university grouping in terms of students, research funding, and world-standard research. ATN universities teach 17 per cent of all domestic students and 16 per cent of all international students in Australia.
Deakin bolsters ATN with a critical regional and gateway city voice through its presence in Geelong and regional Victoria, and an expanded presence in metropolitan Melbourne. Deakin is one of Australia’s largest universities, with the most domestic student enrolments of any higher education provider and over 60,000 students in total.
With an expanded membership, ATN will have a stronger voice in advocating for innovative, practical and accessible education for the jobs of tomorrow, and partnerships with industry aimed at solving real-world problems.
Deakin shares ATN’s proud commitment to equity and social justice. We collectively take pride in our role as anchor institutions in our communities and contributors to civil society. We are driven to provide meaningful opportunities for all Australians, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Comments attributed to Vice Chancellor of Deakin University, Professor Iain Martin:
“In a year that has seen so much change, having a network of peers who can provide advice, guidance and support has never been more important. As a peer university, we have been working with ATN during 2020 and I’m delighted to announce today that, after careful consideration, Deakin will be joining the network.
“As a leader in digital education and capability, it is an exciting time for Deakin to join the ATN family, and the alignment of our missions could not be better. Like us, ATN advocates for innovative, practical and accessible education for the jobs of tomorrow, and partnerships with industry aimed at solving real-world problems.
“Today’s announcement follows the release of our new 10-year strategic plan, Deakin 2030: Ideas to Impact – which describes how we will take the current strengths of our University and build upon them, to meet the needs of our students and communities over the next decade.
“I look forward to working with ATN Executive Director Mr Luke Sheehy and his team, and alongside the members of the network, to see what we can achieve together.
