The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) supports the decision to establish a joint Select Committee to better understand the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in Australia, and the opportunities and threats these technologies present for higher education.
ATN Interim Executive Director, Frank Coletta, said that innovative and authentic approaches to learning needed to include embracing new technologies such as AI, but stressed the importance of an equitable and ethical approach with appropriate protections.
“AI presents wide-ranging opportunities for learning and innovation in higher education. It is crucial that we continue to think critically about these technologies, and what risks their adoption might present, so we can both maximise their benefits and be responsible in using them,” he said.
“Using AI effectively will be a key skill for all Australians in all areas of work and life. As forward-leaning, innovative and creative institutions, ATN universities believe an inquiry can only improve our collective understanding of the opportunities and threats posed by AI. ATN looks forward to engaging with the Joint Committee to ensure perspectives from the higher education sector inform the Committee’s work.”
